How to Get Dog Urine Smell Out of Couch

If dogs used only one piece of household furniture, it would undoubtedly be the couch.  With all the time they spend on these cushions some wear and tear is expected.  However, when an unfortunate urine accident occurs, many people are unsure if a veterinary visit is required and how to return their sofa to it’s original state.

Thankfully, there do exist several household remedies for cleaning the cushions and removing the stench.  By following the below tips, you can increase your odds of wiping out your unwelcome urine-based odor.

Suggested Steps

The following steps play a key role in neutralizing the odors within the couch and adding a bit of freshness back into it.

1 Step 1: Remove Cushion

Once an accident happens, it is important to take immediate action in cleaning it up. If ignored the urine can often make its way through the cushion or into the cracks making this problem much more challenging to remedy.   Remove the affected cushions as soon as possible and temporarily place them outside for cleaning.

2 Step 2: Blot Spot

Step 2: Blot SpotUsing a fresh cloth press firmly down on the location of the urine accident.  Placing your body weight behind the cloth ensures that you will get as much of the urine out of the cushion as possible.

3 Step 3: Pour & Blot

Once no more urine can be blotted from the cushion, pour water onto the spot of the accident and allow for it to saturate into the fiber.  Once it is fully absorbed, begin blotting this spot again to remove this water.  By repeating this step two or three times you can dilute the urine and lift off residual odors within the couch cushion.

4 Step 4: Enzyme Solution

Enzyme solutions are fantastic solutions for all pet related odors.  The activated enzymes work by eating through organics like dog urine and leave freshness behind.  Simply pour the product onto the location of the accident and allow for it to saturate in and sit for 24 hours.  After a day has passed, blot dry the cushion with a clean cloth and move forward with air drying.  Enzyme cleaning products can be found within pet stores and most large super markets. Take care not to use this solution on leather couches. The enzyme solution can have the effect of eating through this organic material and cause visual damage. White vinegar can be used as an alternative for leather couches.

5 Step 5: Sun Dry on Grass

To speed air drying process, place cushion outside on the grass within the sun for a dry.  Take measures to prop the cushion to allow for ventilation on both sides.  As an added benefit, the chlorophyl from the grass, UV rays and fresh air will all work to freshen the cushion.

6 Step 6: Sprinkle Baking Soda

To ward of any residual odors, you can sprinkle baking soda within the interior lining of the couch cushion.  The baking soda will work to absorb any odors should any remain after this process.

Alternative to Enzyme Solution

Unfortunately, enzyme cleaning solution is not always around when it is needed.  In such cases, white vinegar works as a great alternative.

A White Vinegar

The compound within white vinegar naturally combat the smelly effects of ammonia found within dog urine.  Mix a solution of 1 part white vinegar with three parts water and pour on the location of the accident.  Allow the formula to set in for 2-3 hours, and return to blot dry the moisture from the cushion.
