How to Get Smell Out of New Car
1 Citrus Air Freshener Freshen-up
You can neutralize the new car smell by picking up a citrus odor absorber from a department store. Look for the type that has vents on top. Leave it in your car at night. Remove it during the day or when you are using your vehicle. Otherwise, you may find the smell a bit too intense.
2 Get the Fan Running
Another way to get rid of the off-gassing in your new car is to set the climate control so that you are pulling in fresh air with the fan. Allow fresh air to circulate in the car as often as you can. Over time, the new car smell will dissipate.

The non-clumping type of cat litter has great odor-absorbing properties. Many brands are made from zeolite, a microporous mineral. You can pour some kitty litter into a bowl and leave it in the car overnight or make your own hanging deodorizer by pouring the litter into a stocking. Dilute a few drops of Lemon Tea Tree oil in a spray bottle filled with water and apply the solution to the stinky areas. The citric acid within lemon juice will also go to work in cutting through difficult odors to leave the carpeting smelling fresh. Mix a solution of one part lemon juice with five parts water inside a generic spray bottle. If you are able to part your car within a location that has direct sunlight and the safety to leave windows completely rolled down, it can have a powerful deodorizing impact on the car’s interior. Make sure to leave your car to sit within the sun for a minimum of 8 hours. The fresh air and direct UV rays will help to neutralize the odors and carry them away.
When all else fails, you can take your car to the cleaners and have the interior carpeting treated by professionals. Similarly, this works as a fast solution that requires very little time on the part of the owner. If blot drying leaves remaining moisture within hard-to-reach locations, you can rent a dehumidifier and run it within the confines of your car. When all efforts seem to be coming up short, a ozone machine can be rented to neutralize and contain any mildew odors that may be lingering within the automobile. These devices are very powerful and effective, but can be deadly if improperly used. Be sure that you have read the product’s instructions in full before using this solution to eliminate odors within the automobile.
This is a rather simplistic solution which can be effective in most cases of mildew growth within a car. When driving the car, be sure to turn on the air conditioner on full power to ensure that the AC ventilation and interior of the car dries out any remaining moisture that mildew can live from. When not driving the car, be sure to park the car in direct sunlight with the window cracked to allow for additional evaporation of moisture.
A homemade anti-mildew spray can be created from apple cider vinegar, tea tree oil or grape seed extract mixed with water and a small portion of dish detergent. Although all three options are antifungal, apple cider vinegar is far less expensive than opting to use either tea tree oil or grape seed extract.
Use a garden hose immediately after running over the roadkill to wash the critter parts from the car. The longer you wait, the more attached the bits will get to the car’s exterior. Additionally, by washing it within 24 hours, you will not need to wait for the bits to begin to smell as they begin to decay.
If the bits and pieces are presenting a challenge to remove, a pressure hose can be applied to the underside of the carriage to strip them off. Wear a waterproof poncho, boost the car up by utilizing a car lift, and spray down all of the nasty areas. Take precaution to avoid spraying the engine compartment, as this can lead to loosening of wires and hoses within this area.
Once bits of meat have taken hold of the underside of a car, it can be very challenging to get it off. If cleaning becomes to challenging, you can simply wait it out until all of the meat dries and rots away. This process usually takes between 1-2 months to happen.
Mix a bucket of hot tomato soap and begin scrubbing down the affected areas of your car. Be sure that you have given it a thorough spray down in advance to minimize the amount of personal contact with these off-putting residues. Waiting out skunk odor is not advised, as the smell can last up to 6 months after the critters have been run over.
To avoid the staining side-effects of using tomato soap, you can use a deskunking formula to removal the unwanted odor. Mix a quart of hydrogen peroxide with 1/4 cup of baking soda and a teaspoon of dish detergent. Similar to the tomato soap, spray down the car, and proceed to scrub down the affected areas with the solution.
