How to Get Vomit Smell Out of Hair

Dealing with throw-up is unpleasant and is almost always the result of an unexpected upheaval.  Once in your hair, the acidic stench can deeply penetrate the shafts making it difficult to remove by shampooing alone.



Fortunately, there exist several solutions for neutralizing this odor.  By following the below household tips, you will be able to increase your odds of adding freshness back within your follicles.

Vomit Smell Removal Solutions

1 Shampoo and Shampoo Again

Be sure to shampoo right away.  The longer you wait, the more pervasive the odor will become within your hair.  If the acidic odor persists after the first shampooing, continue to rinse and repeat two or even three times until the smell is gone.

2 Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar has long been used as a substitute shampoo for striping unwanted odors from hair.  After rinsing your hair with a mixture of shampoo and apple cider vinegar in equal parts, be sure to follow by shampooing and conditioning as normal.

3 Baking Soda

Mix a solution of water and baking soda in equal parts.  After creating this homemade shampoo paste, take it into shower and begin working into hair until you have covered all of the effected roots.

4 Lemon Juice

Moisten hair with lemon juice and let substance sit for a minimum of 30 minutes.  During this time, be sure to avoid sunlight to prevent unwanted bleaching of your follicles.  After 30 minutes, shampoo your hair to remove any remnants of lemon juice.

Smell Removal On-The-Go

1 Rinse Hair

There’s no saying where you will throw up, but when vomit gets within your hair, you’ll want to wash the bits and pieces out as soon as possible.  Using the sink within a public restroom is often the best solution.

2 Vodka

This party drink has been used for generations to neutralize odor.  Apply substance lightly with hand through affected area of hair.  Upon drying, much of the unwanted stench will be carried away.

3 Oranges & Limes

Though lemon juice is ideal, oranges and limes will work nearly as well.  Wait 30 minutes after squeezing juice into the affected area of hair.  Finalize by rinsing juice clear of hair.

4 Febreze

This products works wonders in removing hair odor when going home is not an option.  Rinse hair in public sink and let follicles air dry.  Upon drying, spray liberal amounts of Febreze into the affected area of hair.
