How to Get Sweat Smell Out of Clothes

Working out and burning calories has a range of benefits.  Unfortunately, sweaty clothing is not one of them.  Once sweat gets within your clothing, it can quickly develop an unwanted aroma.  This odor can follow you the rest of your day, and can even be difficult to remove after running it through your washing machine.

Fortunately, there exist several solutions for neutralizing odors in clothing on-the-go or while at home. By following the below tips, you can get as sweaty as you like without worrying about any embarrassing odors.

Smell Removal On-The-Go

Workouts are often crammed between busy schedules, leaving little time to take showers and deodorize for the rest of our day. These on-the-go deodorizing clothing tips can help to make sure that your workout clothing odors will be contained and smelling fresh for the next part of the day.

1 Baking Soda

Once you’ve completed your workout sprinkle baking soda over all of your clothing.  Baking soda does a great job at absorbing these types of odors and adding freshness to them.  Place clothing within a plastic bag to avoid the powder substance from spilling off your workout clothes.

2 Ziplock Bag

Ziplock bags hold the sweaty moisture in and do a great job at containing odors.  Once you’ve completed your workout, wring the sweat out of your clothing and place it within a ziplock bag until you are ready to launder them. Try to wash clothing the same day that you’ve exercised, as the longer that you wait the more spoiled your clothing will become.

Smell Removal At Home

Sweat odors are often difficult to remove from clothing with tradition cleaning methods.  The stench can sink within fiber and require more than one detergent-based wash to eliminate the odor.

1 Baking Soda

Upon loading the washing machine, pour in a half cup of baking soda with your normal detergent. The baking soda will work to absorb much of the pervasive sweat odors.  As an added benefit, the baking soda will also help to make your whites whiter.

2 White Vinegar

This household remedy has been used for generations for cleaning and deodorizing clothing odors.  Pour one cup of white vinegar in with your detergent wash.  The vinegar will get deep within the clothing fiber and neutralizes body odors on the spot.

3 Air Dry in Sun

If you smell residual odors after running clothing within the washing machine, hang the clothes in the sun to air dry.  The UV rays, fresh breeze, and open space will work to carry the smell away.

Smell Prevention

1 Merino Wool

Using a lightweight merino wool t-shirt can naturally reduce the odors from developing.  Wool works better than cotton and synthetic fibers in reducing odors, and this natural fiber is now available in lightweight exercise clothing.

2 Lightweight Clothing

By wearing lightweight clothing when you exercise, the fiber absorbs less sweat and will be smell fresher than heavy thread clothing.  As an added benefit, this type of clothing takes up less space within your bag.
