How to Get Smell Out of Jeans

Jeans can often develop a foul odor that can grow if left untreated.  Much of the problem is due to their thick fabric that is slow to dry and provides little ventilation for legs.  The mixture of elements work against the fabric that make odors difficult to put out once it’s begun.


 

Fortunately, there are things that can be done to remove the odors, and return freshness back into your jeans.  By taking preventative steps and using the below tips you can be assured that your jeans will never stink again.

Preventative Methods

Taking notice to the following things can save time and effort later on.  Jeans do not need to get if you take the correct step to prevent it from happening.

 

1 Do Not Air Dry

While air drying is normally one of the best things you can do to remove odors from clothing, it is harmful to jeans as the fabric usually requires more than one day to completely dry.  In this time, it can develop long-lasting mildew odor that can be difficult to remove.

 
 

2 Don’t Wear Too Often Without Washing

As a rule, don’t wear your jeans more than 2-3 times without washing them.  Everyone has their own limits, so be sure to know your own.   Take caution, as these types of smells are challenging to remove once they have set deep into the jean’s fiber.

 
 

Smell Removal Solutions

Smells within jeans are often deeply entrenched and difficult to remove by washing alone.  The following suggestions can help in giving the needed boost to wipe out the odor.

 

1 Hot Water

Using hot water is key to removing odors within the mashing machine.  Setting the dial to the hottest setting wash will help in opening up the fabric fibers within the jeans for the detergent to get in and neutralize the odor.

 
 

2 White Vinegar

Vinegar is one of the most effective household solutions for boosting a detergent wash.  Simply measure a full cup of vinegar and pour within washing machine along with normal detergent.  The vinegar will work to cut through any smoke, body odor, or mildew smells that find it’s way within the jeans.

 

3 Baking Soda

This substance works fantastic at absorbing odors within clothing.  Measure a half cup of baking soda and add it within the detergent wash.  Upon completion, much of the odor will be removed and receive the added benefit of softened fabric.

 
 
 

Smell Reduction Without Washing

When washing jeans are not an option, there are still things that can be done to minimize the odors.  Using these options can reduce the odor, however will likely not be enough to completely wipe it out.

 

1 Sun

Laying out in direct sunlight for an hour can help in reducing much of the odor.  The open air, fresh breeze and UV ray all help within the odor reduction.

 
 
 

2 Febreze

This product can help in reducing jean odor on short notice.  Give jeans a thorough spray down and and allow for it to air dry.  Much of the smell will be swept away and replace with a subtle product aroma.

  1. Wow, wonderful advice. As anybody with decent jeans knows, you should only wash them once a week or so, less if you have raw denim.
