When flip flops are used on a regular basis they can easily develop a foul foot related odor within the material.  This pungent is almost always a direct result of dead skin particles and sweat building up that creates an odorous bacteria rich environment.


 

Fortunately, there remain several household remedies for removing the foot related odor and have you sandals smelling like new.  By following the below solutions you will be able to get the funk out of your flip flops.

Flip Flop Deodorizing Solutions

 

1 Soapy Scrubdown + Direct Sunlight

Often all that is required is a soapy scrub down of the sandals outside with a hose.  Using dish detergent, rub down the top side of the sandals ensuring that you have scrubbed within all of the difficult to reach cracks.  Follow this by rinsing the sandals down outside with a hose and leaving them to dry within direct sunlight for the day.  The soap will have the effect of removing much of the buildup as the open space, fresh air and ultraviolet rays will go to work in killing of the last of the bacteria.

 

2 Soak within White Vinegar

This household acid can work wonders in eliminating flip flop odors.   Fill large tray with one part white vinegar and four parts warm water and place your sandals face side down within the formula.  Allow the flip flops to sit for 3-4 hours as the acid within the vinegar gradually strips allow foot related buildup and kills off any unwanted bacteria that may have made a home for themselves within the sandals.  Once they have soaked for the required time, place them outside within direct sunlight dry out.  Please note that white vinegar will have an acidic odor while wet, however it will evaporate odorlessly with the unwanted foot odor after it’s application.

 

3 Rubbing Alcohol Soak

In a similar fashion to white vinegar, rubbing alcohol can work to remove an unwelcome stench from flip flops.  Mix a solution of one part rubbing alcohol with five parts water within a large tray and place your flip flops within it face down.  The alcohol within the mixture will have the effect of killing any odorous bacteria while loosening any foot residue that may have built up.  After 3-4 hour of soaking, place the sandals outside within direct sunlight to air out and dry.

 

4 Deodorize with Enzyme Cleaner

The active enzymes within this cleaning solution will literally eat through any loose organic materials within the surface of the flip flops and kill the bacteria.  Fill a large tray with a low level of enzyme cleaner and place the flip flops face down within the product cleaner.  After 4-6 hours you can remove the sandals and finish the deodorizing process by placing them outdoors within the sun.

 

5 Sprinkle Baking Soda

This kitchen ingredient has been used for decades for it’s odor absorption capibiltites.  If you are dealing with a minor foot odor, baking soda can simply be sprinkled over the top surface in heavy quantities and allowed to sit for 24 hours.  Alternatively, you can also mix a solution of one part baking soda with ten part water within a large tray and allow you sandals to soak face down within the solution for no less than 12 hours.

 

6 Scrub and Freeze

Another effective method for deodorizing flip flops is to scrub the top side down within the sink and proceed to ziplock bag them and place them within the freezer.  the scrubbing will help to strip the flip flop of any residual foot residues while the freeze will effectively freeze any remaining bacteria living within the flip flops.  For best results, make sure that sandals are kept within the freezer for 48 hours before removing to to thaw out within the sun.

Leather boots are very versatile and are often worn without the use of socks. When this happens, high quantities of sweat and dead skin particles can build up within the leather boots and cause an unpleasant stench.


 

Rather than begin wearing socks, there are several things that can be done to remove the foot related odor to ensure that it does not return.  By following some deodorizing tips, you can be sure that the odor will be wiped out and will not return any time soon.

Solutions For Deodorizing Boots

 

1 Give Your Boots a Break

One of the reasons that the boots develop an odor is that they are being worn too often.  When the same pair of boots are worn daily, a moist environment is maintained that becomes inhabited by odorous bacteria. By giving your bots a day or to air out and dry, you will prevent bacteria developing and will ensure that your boots stay fresh.

 

2 Put Your Boots on Ice

Put Your Boots on IceFreezing your boots might sound like a strange idea, but this practice remains very effective at wiping out the smelly bacteria inhabiting boots.  To keep your freezer hygienic, begin by placing both of your boots together and wrapping them within cellophane. Place the cellophane wrapped boots within the freezer and allow for them to sit for 24-48 hours. Once this time has passed, remove the boots and place within the sun for a day to air dry.

 

3 Sprinkle Baking Soda Nightly

Baking soda has long been a kitchen ingredient known for absorbing unwanted odors.  Keep a box of baking soda located by the bed and sprinkle a small portion of that absorbent powder within the interior of the boot nightly.  After sprinkling pay extra attention to lightly shake the boots to ensure that the baking soda makes it all of the way to the toe areas of the boot.  This is especially important because this area of the boot contains that most built up sweat and skin cells.  In the morning, shake out the small amount baking soda within the trash and put the boots back within use.  For best results, provide 24-48 hours for the baking soda to absorb unwanted odors.

 

4 Nylon Enclosed Activated Charcoal

If you have the time, placing activated charcoal within the boots can be very effective at absorbing unwelcome odors.  Before dropping charcoal briquets within your boots, you will need to place them within an old pair of nylon leggings.  Cut the nylon legging in half and places several briquettes within the end of each leg.  Next, push the nylon enclosed activated charcoal briquettes down to the end of the boots, and place the boots within a closed cardboard box or large enclosed paper bag for 5-7 days.  After a week has passed, the charcoal will have absorbed much of the unwanted odor leaving the boots smelling fresh.

 

5 Steal Your Kitten’s Litter

Using clean kitten litter is highly effective at absorbing unwanted odors within boots.  It works by immediate creating  a dry environment and goes to work at freshening the interior of the boots.  Measure a half cup of unused kitty litter ever few days and pour within each boot before going to bed. Be sure to shuffle the boots slightly to make sure that the entire bottom surface of the boots are covered by this absorbent product.  Finish in the morning by pouring this compound out of boots and putting them back within use. While using overnight is sufficient in many cases, best results are reached when the kitty litter is left within the boots for an entire 24-48 hours.

 

6 Two to Three Days of Coffee Grounds

Coffee grounds are compound known to absorb unwanted odors from footwear and add the gentile aroma of coffee beans.  Pour a half cup of coffee beans within the end of an old pair of nylon socks and tie a knot 6 inches above the end of each leggings foot.  For additionally precaution, overlap the area contain the coffee grounds with the remaining part of the legging to ensure that the coffee beans do not result in the discoloration of the interior of the boots.  Once you have two separately contained nylon enclosed coffee ground pouches put them deep within the interior of the boots and leave the boot to sit for two to three days.  Once this time has passed remove the nylon enclosed coffee bean pouches to use at a future date, and put boots back into use.
